Mei-Lin Luo Maunakea

Mei-Lin Luo Maunakea

Mei-Lin Luo Maunakea, MSTCM, Dipl. OM, L.Ac, is a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the state of Maryland. She received extensive training in integrative Western medicine and Chinese medicine over a four year intensive Masters degree program at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco, California where she obtained a Masters in Science Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MSTCM). She is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) as a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine (Dipl. OM). She is also certified by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM) in clean needle technique and is a certified Tui Na Massage Therapist.  She is also fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.  Currently she is a member of the Maryand Acupuncture Society (MAS) and American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM).

After having immigrated to the U.S. from China with her parents at a young age, Mei-Lin sought opportunities to study science. Prior to her Traditional Chinese Medicine studies, Mei-Lin has had extensive training in biomedical sciences. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Neuroscience at Oberlin College, Ohio, she became a basic and clinical researcher at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), respectively. As a basic researcher at UCSF, she has studied the molecular mechanisms of leukemogenesis in specific mouse models of human leukemias. As a clinical researcher at NIH, she has investigated the etiology of Turner syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting females. Her work has been published in reputable scientific journals such as Cancer Cell and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Although Mei-Lin appreciated the experiences she received in biomedical science, she felt compelled to help people improve their health and well-being much more directly.

Her calling was strengthed by her uncle, a well-known acupuncturist in China, who inspired Mei-Lin to train in Traditional Chinese Medicine and combine it with her knowledge of 'Western' science to help people in the U.S. Thus, she began her training at the first accredited graduate school for Traditional Chinese Medicine in the U.S., ACTCM, San Francisco. After obtaining a MSTCM degree, she sought further training as an Intern in the Academy of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, LLC in Maryland, specializing in pain management. Having completed her internship, she has established Bethesda Acupuncture and Wellness, LLC in order to accomplish her goal of helping others through the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
